Answer first: save the current NCTS preparation instructions with the appointment record, organise the requested identification and vehicle documents, and make a dated note of the simple presentation checks you performed. Keep maintenance evidence separate: preparation notes cannot predict a test result.
Capture the current instruction source
Requirements and operational instructions can change. On the day you prepare the pack, save or link to the NCTS FAQ section on preparing for the NCT and record the date accessed. Keep the appointment confirmation and any rescheduling correspondence with it. Use the current official version, not an undated checklist copied from a forum.
Make an appointment-day document list
| Record | What to capture | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Appointment | Date, time, centre and booking reference | Confirmed / needs checking |
| Identification | The current form of ID requested by NCTS | Ready / missing |
| Vehicle registration document | Document requested in current instructions | Ready / missing |
| Correspondence | Relevant NCTS email or instruction | Filed / none |
Do not place unnecessary personal-document copies in an unsecured glovebox or public folder. The pack can record that an item is ready without duplicating sensitive data.
Record simple presentation checks
Follow the current NCTS instructions on items such as visible seat belts, removed valuables and access needed for the test. Record the date and who made the check. If a warning light, fault, leak, damage or access problem is noticed, write that down and seek appropriate advice rather than marking the vehicle “ready” on the strength of a visual list.
Where the vehicle has modifications, conversions or unusual features, keep the related documents available and organise them with the vehicle modification document map. The existence of documents does not establish how a test centre will treat a vehicle.
Keep maintenance and inspection evidence separate
A maintenance file might contain service records, repair invoices, tyre records, work reports and photographs. Index those records by date and vehicle identity, but do not describe them as an NCT pass guarantee. The RSA’s vehicle-owner resources provide the current official route for vehicle-owner information.
For restoration work, link only the relevant entries from the restoration project record pack. Preserve the full originals separately so the test-preparation file does not become the only copy.
File the result without over-interpreting it
After the appointment, retain the report, date, vehicle identity and any follow-up correspondence. Record actions as proposed, booked or completed, with supporting evidence for each state. Do not treat an NCT result as a permanent declaration of condition or a substitute for maintenance and appropriate inspection between tests.
