VW T5
Irish Buying Guide

๐Ÿ“… Updated May 2026โฑ 10 min read๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Ireland-specific

The VW T5 is the newest vehicle that most Irish buyers consider for a retro-style campervan conversion. It's not strictly 'classic', but the first-generation T5s (2003โ€“2009) are now over 20 years old and the conversion community around them is substantial. If you want van-life practicality with a VW badge and modern reliability, the T5 is the most popular choice.

Overview

The T5 was a major step forward in reliability and practicality over the T4. TDI diesel engines are economical and long-lived; the body is more rust-resistant than earlier VW Buses; and the range of conversion options is wider than any previous generation.

In Ireland, you'll find T5 campervans in several configurations: factory VW California conversions (expensive but premium), van-conversion company builds (Auto-Sleepers, Wellhouse, Reimo), and self-builds by individuals who bought a bare panel van and fitted their own interior.

What to inspect

Before any purchase, budget two hours for a proper inspection. Bring a torch and a magnet (magnets don't stick to body filler). Ideally bring someone who knows the model.

  • Lower door edges โ€” rust starts here on higher-mileage vans.
  • Rear wheel arches โ€” internal arch liner traps moisture.
  • Roof rails โ€” if the roof rail seals have failed, water can enter the top-of-window area.
  • Conversion quality โ€” on self-builds, inspect the furniture fixings and electrical work carefully. Amateur wiring is a fire risk.

Rust and bodywork

All classic campervans rust. The question is where, how badly, and whether it's been properly repaired or hidden. Run your magnet along all lower body panels โ€” hollow sounds or magnetic readings where there shouldn't be any both indicate filler over rust.

Parts availability in Ireland

Post-Brexit, sourcing parts from UK suppliers adds 20โ€“25% in customs and VAT. For major restoration work, order parts in bulk to minimise per-shipment costs. See our post-Brexit parts guide for current best practice.

Verdict

The T5 is the most cost-effective route into campervan life if reliability and practicality are your priorities. The conversion aftermarket is huge, parts are cheap, and a good T5 California will do everything a T2 does โ€” more reliably and for a lot less money.

For the retro aesthetic, look for a well-converted example with period-sympathetic interior design โ€” some of the California variants genuinely capture a vintage feel while being modern under the skin.
