The VW T4 is the right first classic campervan for most Irish buyers. Produced from 1990 to 2003, it's the youngest model that still earns the 'classic' label โ old enough to have character, young enough that a standard mechanic can service it without specialist knowledge. Parts are plentiful and cheap compared to earlier models.
Overview
The T4 moved the engine to the front and adopted front-wheel drive โ a significant departure from the rear-engine, rear-drive layout of the T2 and T3. This made it more practical as a commercial vehicle and more comfortable to drive, but it also means some of the old 'experience' is gone. For buyers who want to actually use their campervan, the T4 is often the smarter choice.
T4 campervans in Ireland include factory Westfalia conversions, conversion-company vans (Auto-Sleepers, Bilbo's, Reimo), and self-builds. The factory Westfalia T4 "California" is the most desirable variant.
Irish prices in 2026
The Irish market for the VW T4 reflects both its rarity and condition. Here's what to expect:
โฌ5,000โโฌ20,000. Wide range โ condition is everything.
Low to medium โ accessible for most mechanics
What to inspect
Before any purchase, budget two hours for a proper inspection. Bring a torch and a magnet (magnets don't stick to body filler). Ideally bring someone who knows the model.
- Sill rust โ the sills rust from the inside out. Tap along the full length; any flex or hollow sound means rot.
- Front wheel arch rust โ common on higher-mileage vans.
- Roof rust on pop-top variants โ the hinge and seal channels collect water.
- Fuel tank โ plastic fuel tanks on later models can crack. Check for fuel smells.
Rust and bodywork
All classic campervans rust. The question is where, how badly, and whether it's been properly repaired or hidden. Run your magnet along all lower body panels โ hollow sounds or magnetic readings where there shouldn't be any both indicate filler over rust.
Parts availability in Ireland
Post-Brexit, sourcing parts from UK suppliers adds 20โ25% in customs and VAT. For major restoration work, order parts in bulk to minimise per-shipment costs. See our post-Brexit parts guide for current best practice.
Verdict
The T4 is the pragmatist's choice. It drives well, it's cheap to maintain, parts are everywhere, and a good one will take you around Ireland reliably. If you're new to classic campervans, start here โ you'll learn what you want before spending serious money on a T2 or T3.
Look for a high-spec variant with the pop-top roof and original conversion fitments โ these hold value better than basic panel-van conversions.
