VW T3 Wedge (Vanagon)
Irish Buying Guide

๐Ÿ“… Updated May 2026โฑ 10 min read๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Ireland-specific

The VW T3 โ€” known as the Wedge in Ireland and the UK, the Vanagon in North America โ€” is the most undervalued classic campervan on the Irish market right now. Produced from 1979 to 1992, it bridges the gap between the iconic air-cooled T2 and the more modern water-cooled era. Values have been rising steadily since 2020 as buyers who can't afford T2s have moved their attention here.

Overview

The T3 introduced water-cooling to the VW Bus range (from 1983 in most versions), making it more reliable and easier to service than the air-cooled T2. Early models still had the air-cooled flat-four; later models got the 1.9L water-cooled engine and, in the Syncro (four-wheel drive) variant, even better off-road capability.

For campervans, the Westfalia conversions again carry a premium. The T3 Westfalia "Atlantik" and "Joker" variants are the most sought-after. Non-Westfalia conversions and self-builds are also available at lower prices.

Irish prices in 2026

The Irish market for the VW T3 Wedge (Vanagon) reflects both its rarity and condition. Here's what to expect:

Buying difficulty

Medium โ€” parts becoming harder to source

What to inspect

Before any purchase, budget two hours for a proper inspection. Bring a torch and a magnet (magnets don't stick to body filler). Ideally bring someone who knows the model.

  • Chassis rails โ€” the main longitudinal chassis rails rust from inside. Tap them; a hollow sound or visible surface rust means internal rot. This is an expensive fix.
  • Rear wheel arch inners โ€” collect road spray and rust quietly. Get under the van and look up inside the arches.
  • Floor around the sliding door runner โ€” water ingress here is common and rots the floor.
  • Front crossmember โ€” the front beam can rust from within. Probe with a screwdriver.

Rust and bodywork

All classic campervans rust. The question is where, how badly, and whether it's been properly repaired or hidden. Run your magnet along all lower body panels โ€” hollow sounds or magnetic readings where there shouldn't be any both indicate filler over rust.

Parts availability in Ireland

Post-Brexit, sourcing parts from UK suppliers adds 20โ€“25% in customs and VAT. For major restoration work, order parts in bulk to minimise per-shipment costs. See our post-Brexit parts guide for current best practice.

Verdict

The T3 is the best value classic campervan for a first-time buyer who wants the real VW Bus experience without the T2 price tag. Parts supply is still manageable (mostly UK and German suppliers), values are rising but not yet stratospheric, and the Westfalia versions are genuinely beautiful vehicles.

Buy sooner rather than later โ€” T3 prices have been rising 10โ€“15% year-on-year and the window for affordable entry is closing.
